Track of the Day: “Mother” by IDLES

Brutalism, the recently released debut album from London post punk group Idles, is an explosion of undiluted rage. “Mother,” the third track off the LP, is merely one example of that rage.

Idles are a band firmly in the tradition of punk, something illustrated by the heavily politicized lyrics of “Mother.” “The best way to scare a Tory is to read and get rich” is only one example of the vitriol that vocalist Joe Talbot spews with a thick accent and a disgusting snarl. Built on repetition, “Mother” is a track that will make you want to get up and scream for no reason. Rest assured though, Idles are screaming for a reason and even though one might not agree with their politics, the rage behind their music is undeniable.

One of the most notable parts of the track are Talbot’s raspy screams of “Mother… Fucker,” a line he repeatedly delivers throughout with an unbelievable amount of hate. Instrumentally, the cut is filled with tight hooks and hard-hitting, simplistic drumming filtered through a haze of noisy rage. While the influence of the first wave of punk bands is clear in the themes of “Mother,” the music itself is indebted to U.K. post punk.

Near the end, Talbot gives an interesting perspective on sexual violence in a surprisingly clear and calm voice, resulting in a moment of peace in the otherwise violent track. So as not to leave anyone confused however, Talbot follows up with his angriest “Mother… Fucker’s” yet: a final showing of anger before the track cuts out. Ultimately, “Mother,” along with Brutalism, is a joy to listen to and one of the most genuinely angry and bitter releases in a while.
